Money for love against revenge! Antonio for Bassanio, Portia for Bassanio, Portia against Shylock: can the Jew demand a pound of meat from The Merchant of Venice?
Director’s notes by Solimano Pontarollo
To confront the Merchant of Venice is to confront Shylock. The risk being, deviation from the main theme to linger on the story of the most famous Jewish Venetian and the “pound of flesh” in question.
In staging the Merchant of Venice Solimano Pontarollo, asked for the help of Andrea De Manincor, who in the adaption joined in with the necessity to rebalance the themes, this way allowing the drama of Shylock to emerge without over riding or rending the rest of the story superficial. Beginning with Baldassarre the lawyer, none other than Portia in disguise, taking the viewer by the hand, accompanying them into the plot, thus presenting a “ Merchant” where all the main characters have full reason to be. The plot returns as the protagonist in all its facets, and tank to this we are given an extraordinary Portia “deus ex machina” of history, a complete Bassanio in his maturity and distanced from his previous life and Antonio a rich inner complexity. From here, arises magically the opportunity to experience perhaps even more intensely the story of the Jew.
A noble Palace, its history and its rooms to get to the process!
Palazzo Marin, an authentic Venetian Palazzo of the sixteenth century between Santa Maria del Giglio e il Gran Teatro La Fenice. A sign on the wellhead in the inner courtyard testifies that the building belonged to the Marin family, who oversaw the restoration and renovation of the interior decoration starting from 1760.
